After enjoying Camden, zip up US 1 to Belfast, a working harbor with a gentrified waterfront, pubs, and shops. Hit Searsport for GREAT antiques. Then on to Bucksport and the Down East Gateway bridge across the Penobscot River. Nearby is historic Castine, continuously occupied since 1612. Castine offers world-class sailing, a history museum, and sea captains’ mansions from the 1700s. Brooklin is home to the internationally famous Wooden Boat School, which offers classes in sailing, navigation, and boat building. Eggemoggin Reach, which separates the peninsula from Deer Isle, is a renowned sailing spot—and one of the most beautiful places in the world. Deer Isle boasts the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts as well as shops, art galleries, and antiquing. Deer Isle’s most famous village is Stonington—the working harbor gateway to Isle au Haut and the thousands of tiny islands surrounding it (a kayakers dream!). Cape Rosier offers a nature preserve with excellent bird watching, and Blue Hill boasts a rare reversing falls, as well as upscale restaurants, art galleries, and bookstores. There are entire guidebooks that sing the praises of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Click HERE for Tour Coastal Maine.com’s recommended highlights on Acadia and Mt. Desert Island. After exploring Bar Harbor, take the “Cat” ferry across the Gulf of Maine to Nova Scotia—a day’s adventure during summer. Winter Harbor is a much shorter ferry excursion—just across scenic Frenchman’s Bay. The fishing villages of Prospect and Corea are the gateway to the remote “bold coast” that offer the true down east Maine experience. |
